The large and expansive area of heavy rainfall that impacted Southeast Louisiana and South Mississippi today causing catastrophic flash flooding has decreased in coverage for the most part. However, there are still some areas of moderate to heavy rainfall over Southern Louisiana. This rain will is not expected to dissipate and will continue tonight.
Additional storms similar to today’s will also develop across South Louisiana and South Mississippi again overnight and early tomorrow morning.
The storms tonight and tomorrow will bring additional rainfall accumulations of 4 – 8” to South Louisiana and South Mississippi. However, it does appear very likely that rainfall accumulations will be double that across parts of Southeast Louisiana.
This will likely lead to extremely dangerous and catastrophic flash flooding overnight and tomorrow – particularly across Southeast Louisiana. In addition, river flooding will also become a serious concern as early as tomorrow and continuing into early next week and could be historic in some places.
As a result, flash flood watches are in effect throughout much of South Louisiana and South Mississippi through Saturday and Sunday.
For more information regarding watches and warning specific to your local area consult your local National Weather Service Office’s website.
The threat for heavy rainfall and flash flooding will shift west slightly on Sunday out of Southern Mississippi. However, heavy rainfall and flash flooding will continue in South Louisiana.
Overall and additional 6 – 12” of rain will likely fall across South Louisiana and South Mississippi over the next day or two with accumulations double that possible.
The system causing this should finally lift out of the Gulf Coast Region on Sunday night or Monday allowing things to dry out in Louisiana. However, as we mentioned above, river flooding will continue into early next week.
We will have another update out tomorrow morning.
