Tropical Storm Don Forms East of the Caribbean

A U.S. Air Force hurricane hunter aircraft found that invest 95L has attained a closed surface circulation, and thus enough organization to be upgraded to Tropical Storm Don — the fourth Tropical Storm of the 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

Analysis

As of the 5pm EDT advisory, tropical storm Don was located just east of the Caribbean Sea, moving west with winds of 40mph.

GOES-16 satellite image showing Don. You can also see the Saharan Air layer to the north.  (Note: data from GOES-16 is preliminary and non-operational at this time).

Satellite images show that the convection associated with Don is not well organized. However, they also show that there is some modest thunderstorm activity near Don’s center, along with a well distinct band feature in the Western Quadrant.

Forecast for Don

Don will essentially track due west over the next 3 days, reaching the Eastern Caribbean Wednesday. Some strengthening is expected tonight and tomorrow, as conditions are favorable for the most part.

However, dissipation is likely in the Eastern Caribbean on Thursday due to unfavorable upper-level winds.

Watches and Warnings

Tropical storm watches and warnings have been issued for parts of the Caribbean (see forecast track for Don above and hurricanes.gov for more information regarding the watches and warnings associated with Don).
