Potential for Strong to Severe Storms, Heavy Rain Late This Week

A trough is going to dig into the Western U.S. late this week and spawn a rather strong storm system in the Plains Friday.

Over the weekend, this system will eject into the Midwest/Great Lakes region, bringing a trailing cold front across the southern tier of the nation — including the Gulf Coast.

Figure 2. GFS animation from Friday through Sunday showing the evolution of the storm system/front.

Ahead of the front deep, tropical moisture will get advected north, causing widespread heavy rain and storms along the front.

There will be potential for a strong/severe storms once again. However, it is too early for specifics.

The Storm Prediction Center has outlined a 15% (slight) risk area for portions of East Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi for Friday (see figure 1); adjustments are likely over the coming days. A risk area could also be added for Saturday for areas further east.

Very cold air (for this time of year) will move in behind the front, bringing well below average temperatures.

We will have more details over the coming days.
