Brief Evening Update on Dorian

Figure 1. Latest forecast track for Dorian from the National Hurricane Center.

Dorian is still pounding Grand Bahama and Abaco this evening.

As of the 10 PM EDT advisory, Dorian had maximum sustained winds of 185 mph, a minimum pressure of 915 millibars and was moving west at 5 mph.

Here is a brief forecast update:

*The latest forecast track still maintains a northward turn Tuesday, with a track parallel to Florida’s east coast.

*There has been a very slight west trend in model guidance today, and Dorian is now forecast to pass just 40 – 50 miles east of Florida.

*Only a slight shift west in the official forecast track for Dorian would result in a Florida landfall.

*Due to the aforementioned slight westward shift, hurricane-force winds are now expected for a portion of the east coast of Florida between Monday and Wednesday, which has prompted the issuance of a Hurricane Warning (see figure 1).

*Another change this evening is the threat to Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina later this week, which has further increased.
