Gulf Low to Bring Heavy Rain, Gale Force Winds Through Sunday

A surface low is going to form in the central/northern Gulf this afternoon.

The low is going to track northeast into the Florida Panhandle Sunday evening/night, and then push off into thee western Atlantic by late Monday/Tuesday.

While the low is expected to track into the Florida Panhandle, impacts will span from southeast Louisiana to south Florida.

The main impact will be periods of heavy rain; accumulations will likely range from 0.5 – 2″ in southeast Louisiana and Mississippi, and 2 – 4″ farther east (see figure 2).

Very gusty winds can also be expected – especially offshore in the central and eastern Gulf, where gale-force winds (39 – 54 mph) are likely.

Severe weather will also be possible in south Florida Sunday. The Storm Prediction Center has outlined a level 1 (marginal) risk area (see figure 3).

The primary threat will likely be damaging winds. However, a tornado or two will also be possible.

The good news is that, as stated above, the low should move off into the Atlantic by late Monday/Tuesday, setting the stage for a nice Christmas with regard to the weather.
