Third Tropical Depression of 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season Forms in Southwest Gulf

Satellite data and surface observations indicate that Invest 93L has become a tropical depression – the third of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season.

As of the 5 PM EDT advisory, Tropical Depression Three (TD-3) had maximum sustained winds of 30 mph and was moving west-northwest at 7 mph.

Favorable upper-level winds coupled with warm sea surface temperatures should allow for intensification, and TD-3 should become Tropical Storm Cristobal sometime in the next 12 to 24 hours.

The National Hurricane Center is predicting TD-3 to meander in the Bay of Campeche before lifting northward into the central Gulf Saturday. This scenario would allow for a stronger storm.
