Hanna Becomes a Hurricane; Landfall to Occur Later Today

Hanna became the first hurricane of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season this morning.

As of the 7 AM CDT advisory Hanna had maximum sustained winds of 75 mph, making it a category 1 on the Saffir-Simpson scale. The minimum pressure was 982 mb. Movement was west at 9 mph.

Hanna will make landfall somewhere between Corpus Christi and Brownsville late this afternoon or early this evening. Strengthening is likely up until landfall.

The brunt of the impact from Hanna will be felt from about Rockport to Brownsville and into the South Texas Plains. Conditions will get progressively worse as the day progresses.

Very strong winds (hurricane force) will occur within the hurricane warning area. In addition, a storm surge of 1 to 5′ and 6 to 10″ of rain is expected.
