Significant Severe Weather Event to Unfold Across Central Plains, Upper Midwest This Afternoon into Tonight

Another significant severe weather event is set to unfold this afternoon into tonight. This time from the Central Plains into the Upper Midwest.

The Storm Prediction Center has defined a moderate (level 4 out of 5) risk for severe weather for parts of Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.

According to the Storm Prediction Center, this is the “first moderate risk area in the IA/MN/WI region during the month of December.”

A line of strong to severe storms is expected to develop in eastern Nebraska this afternoon, where there is an enhanced (level 3 out of 5) risk for severe weather, and advance quickly northeast into the Upper Midwest.

Storms will be capable of producing damaging winds gusts of 60 – 75 mph with gusts up to 80 – 100 mph possible. Tornadoes, a few of which could be strong, will also be possible. Some Instances of large/severe hail also can’t be ruled out.

This will once again be a nocturnal event, and those in the threat area should have multiple ways to receive watch/warning info.
