While the GFS ‘modelcane’ is unsurprisingly not going to verify, some tropical moisture is going to make its way north this weekend into next week.
High pressure nosing into the southeast from the Atlantic will help advect moisture into the Gulf Coast. This moisture, combined with a decaying slow moving cold front, will result in beneficial rainfall for parts of the southern Plains, Mississippi Valley, and parts of the Gulf Coast this weekend into early next week.
Most of the western U.S. and a large portion of the central U.S. is experiencing abnormally dry to exceptional drought conditions. Extreme drought conditions continue along parts of the western and central Gulf Coast in Texas and Louisiana.
Another cold front is set to move through during the Wednesday-Thursday timeframe keeping things unsettled.
This rainfall will not entirely eliminate drought conditions. However, it will ease them in some areas.
Widespread severe weather is not expected, but there is a slight (level 2 out of 5) and marginal (level 1 out of 5) risk for severe weather in place for today. There could also be some instances of localized flash flooding.
